Songs Above, Waves Below
– Tullan Strand, Co. Donegal
Recorded: 28th June 2025
This immersive field recording begins at the end of Tullan Strand, where the dunes of the Pillars of Eden rise in soft, sweeping forms. Overhead, skylarks hover and sing, their bright, tumbling notes carrying on the breeze. Their song weaves with the low hush of the surf in the distance, a prelude to the energy of the beach ahead.
Moving closer, the soundscape opens wide. Tullan Strand, the surfing mecca, is alive with the full voice of the Atlantic. Long rolling waves crash in succession, their rhythm constant yet varied, each break fizzing and roaring as it runs toward shore. The sea here has a presence that fills the air, a reminder of its scale and force. Beneath it all is the murmur of voices and boards cutting through water, the soundtrack of a place shaped by both nature and those drawn to ride it.
Leaving the strand behind, the path rises to the Roughey Cliff Walk. The energy softens as the perspective shifts, the sound of the surf now more distant, carried up on the breeze. Grasses move in the wind, brushing and whispering as the cliff edge opens to views back across the bay. The further the walk continues toward Bundoran, the quieter the sea becomes, its roar falling into a steady wash against the rocks below.
The recording closes in a gentler rhythm, where sea and land meet in quiet balance. At the edge of Bundoran the waves roll with a softer voice, their rise and fall carrying the timeless pulse of the Atlantic.
